Passions Run High
Over Issue of Lap-dancing Club
Derby City Council yesterday approved an application for the city's first lap-dancing club, Eden, in Sadler Gate. The club, which will open on Thursday, has attracted mixed views from the public. Phil Stubbs spoke to two people who view lap dancing from opposite ends of the spectrum.
Against the clubs
Graham Prosser (54), male voice choir leader, Alvaston.
I have urged the council, as a licensing authority, not to authorise or permit such a club or clubs to operate in our city of Derby. The reasons? This neo-nudity is asking for the severe judgement and punishment by the Holy Lord God of the Holy Bible as sure as night follows day on any who give approval to such an evil, on the organisers and on the participants.
It will be God's own hand alone that will do that. By sexual allurement, very much a feature of the arrangement described, permanent damage is done to the chastity of single people and permanent damage is also done to the fidelity of married couples. The allurement into anarchy from our Holy Lord God's sacred order defies the Holy Lord God and His wonderful plan for the sacredness of the individual and the marriage relationship.
In history, countries have been known to fall and collapse from within. The means of this fall has been immorality - the simplest enemy to the well-being of any country. It is clear that neo-nudity, outside of the sacred marriage boundaries, is sin, and always does damage. It undermines people sexually, when God has a sacred order and a lovely plan for people within the beautiful order of marriage.
The activity described will be an outright attack, undermining the integrity of the basic unit of our community, the family. Such evil brings severe allurement to bear on the sanctity, chastity and fidelity of individuals. The trick is to show the sugar of allurement and hide the hell that follows: the grief of unfaithfulness, the heartache of the break of trust and the diversion from where one's focus should be, with one's own wife or husband. Then there are further drastic consequences the emotional, mental and psychological damage, leading to further break-up of trust and confidence in the loyalty of the marriage union; then the breaking up of the marriage with its dreadful, far-reaching damage to all the members of that family.
Who will want to marry a girl who is already made, in effect, common property of those who are prepared to pay for seeing her public nakedness? This described club activity is even focused for our businessmen. What a target, to undermine the sacredness of marriage among our business leaders and break their sanctity of marriage vows first and then work on the rest of the city.
I would appeal to the local authority to hold the leadership of our city well, in the orderliness of family life. Please do not aid, license or approve this attack on the sacred boundaries of married life, by the process of allurement and seduction for sale. To approve such an evil attack on the sanctity and faithfulness of marriage, both before marriage as well as the actual married, presents such an activity as being "licensed" by the council and its officials. It sows the seed in those people tempted that, if it's legal, it's OK. The reality is that it is immediately destructive in every soul that participates and it is the road of allurement into destruction. The Bible tells us that God's purpose for us in psalm 103 is to "Redeem us from destruction".
For the clubs
Mags (30), dance manager for Eden, Sadler Gate.
I have many friends and colleagues who are dancers, and they tell me that there is no harm in doing what they do. These clubs are there. If people don't want to go, they are not forced to go. But the growing popularity of these clubs prove that there is a big market for it. Table-dancing is the in thing. It is the trendy thing to do and England has got to keep up with the trend.
American table-dancing firms like Spearmint Rhino have taken over England. I am sure that, if Eden didn't go ahead, they would just come into Derby. We may as well promote our own. If it was that degrading, women wouldn't be doing it. Seven or eight years ago, things may have been slightly different. But now we have a lot of young and very beautiful girls. Anyone who goes to a club now will get a real eye-opener. They are very classy and are very much gentlemen's clubs in the best possible sense. I think some English people are very conservative about what goes on. If you go to Amsterdam, there are brothels on the street. In table-dancing clubs, there's no sex in any way. People are just too conservative.
As far as objections that the entertainment promotes adultery, I can't predict what the men think when they watch the dancers. But, at the end of the day, if a man was to go to a normal nightclub, he would chat a girl up and anything might happen afterwards. In a table-dancing club, he chats her up and that is it. The girls who dance are often those studying for degrees and people who are actually working but who want to supplement their income with a part-time job. You also get young mothers who arrange babysitters for the evening. It is good for the girls, it gives them the flexibility of hours and lets them get out of it what they want.
A dancer's life is like that of a professional footballer. They don't last for ever. But they are all normal, outgoing girls. They often have boyfriends, and most of them accept that what they do is a job like anyone else's. About half the girls are probably there just to earn the money - the others do it because they really enjoy the work. To dance, you have got to have a really open personality and really enjoy having conversations. It is not just about "let me see your body".
The objectors would think of any excuse for these things not to go ahead. It is not aimed just at businessmen, it is aimed at the general public. A lot of guys would rather come to places like these and chat girls up than go to a nightclub. When they have boys' nights out, it is much safer for a guy to go to a table-dancing club. And girls are the same as men in many ways. We don't all get the compliments we want in normal life, and when men tell the dancers what lovely bodies they have or how beautiful they are, there's a feeling of satisfaction that their work has been done.
