Update
Councillor Bannerman said: “... is this something we want to aspire to do, to become the sex entertainment capital of the west side of Birmingham?
One venue (with discreet frontage) offering lap-dancing three times a week is hardly likely to turn Shrewsbury into a latter-day Sodom or Gomorrah!
Another comment: 'There can be no disagreement that this kind of "entertainment" is degrading to women, and degrading of the men who watch it.'
Every person is entitled to his or her moral code, but a significant proportion of young women nowadays are not ashamed to display their bodies.

On the contrary, plenty of people would disagree that statement! But then, the most vocal opponents of striptease generally appear more interested in setting themselves up as unquestionable authorities, than they do with checking basic facts and canvassing public opinion accurately.Victor23 wrote:Another comment: 'There can be no disagreement that this kind of "entertainment" is degrading to women, and degrading of the men who watch it.'

Do any of you guys feel seriously degraded?
Re: SY1 1QJ Source Vodka Bar, Shrewsbury
As I've observed before: I feel uncomfortable seeing under-dressed chav girls screaming and giggling in public - and that's early in the evening as they make their way to the pubs and clubs. As for what they're like four hours or so later, I have to rely on TV coverage of cops/medics on patrol in town centres, but their language and drunkenness really is degrading.

It makes me want to move to Shrewsbury, sounds like it's the last night in Sodom each and every weekend!
Re: SY1 1QJ Source Vodka Bar, Shrewsbury
Oh dear. One of the later comments to the article:
'The Guardian gave a darker portrait of lap dancing in an article partly based on an interview with a former stripper. It stated that "research shows that the majority of women become lap-dancers through poverty and lack of choice," and that "academic research has linked lap-dancing to trafficking, prostitution and an increase in male sexual violence against both the women who work in the clubs and those who live and work in their vicinity."[Surely not Lilith being quoted again?] For example, a "recent conference in Ireland highlighted the use of lap-dance clubs by human traffickers as a tool for grooming women into prostitution; the clubs also normalise the idea of paying for sexual services." "Research on strip clubs in the US found that all dancers had suffered verbal harassment and physical and sexual abuse while at work; all had been propositioned for prostitution; and three-quarters had been stalked by men associated with the club.'
At least AFAIK no-one has referred to lap-dancing clubs in the current fuss about Broad Street in Birmingham.
One of several articles.
BTW, a well-known dancer who has survived unscathed from years in working in various pubs - including at least one in a seedy area - tells me that a few years ago she was thrown to the ground and molested in Leicester Square in full public gaze.

I'm guessing that the commentator in question is quoting an article published prior to 2012, when the Graun finally stopped giving Object Now a platform following some very damaging revelations about them. It's also very telling that the 'linked to trafficking' meme has resurfaced again, when the only UK reference is the Bindel report, which quoted a highly inaccurate Sunday Record article published ten years earlier as its only relevant source.Victor23 wrote:Oh dear.
